By integrating Omniconvert Explore with Google Analytics 4, you’ll be able to track details about your experiments directly within the GA4 interface. Each time a visitor enters an experiment, a custom GA4 event named Omniconvert is triggered, along with two event parameters:
- Exp_Name – the name of the experiment
- Exp_Var – the name of the variation
These need to be defined as custom dimensions in GA4 to be visible in reports.
How does it work?
The integration presumes that two conditions have already been met:
- You already have an active Google Analytics 4 property for your website, as you’ll need to input your web data stream Measurement ID and a GA4 API secret to connect the two platforms in order to facilitate data flow if you’ll opt for server-side GA4 event tracking)
- The Omniconvert Explore tracking code is already implemented on your website according to the tracking code installation guide.
Once you set up the Google Analytics integration for your website, you will automatically collect an event called Omniconvert and two event parameters called Exp_Var & Exp_Name, which you’ll need to define as custom dimensions according to the instructions mentioned in this article.
Activation steps
Step 1. Configure the Integration
1. From within Explore, press on your website to open the features dropdown, and select Integrations.
2. Click Configure next to Google Analytics.
Step 2. Choose your Integration Type
You will two options available for the GA4 Integration:
Client-Side (Default) – Use this if you’re not running split URL tests. Omniconvert will auto-detect all GA4 Measurement IDs on your site and send data to them.
Server-Side – Use this if you:
- Are doing split URL testing.
- Want to send data to only one GA4 property.
Step 2.1. Client-Side
Enable the Google Analytics integration by checking the Enabled button, then select the Google Analytics 4 (Client Side) option from the dropdown menu if you’re not planning to run split URL testing, as we’ll automatically fetch all GA4 Measurement IDs that are present on your site for you and send Omniconvert event data to all your GA4 properties.
Step 2.2. Server-Side
If you decide to do Split URL testing in Explore or just send Omniconvert event data in a single GA4 property, make sure to select the Google Analytics 4 (Server Side) Analytics Type from the dropdown menu after you enable the integration.
Obtaining the Measurement ID from your GA4 property
If you select Server-Side, you will see that some new details are required.
We’ll now continue to guide you on how to obtain the Measurement ID and API secret in order to finalize your GA4 server-side integration.
1. Navigate to your Google Analytics account.
2. Open the Admin menu by clicking the bottom right cog symbol.
3. Click the Data streams menu from the Data collection and modification category.
4. Identify and click your web data stream
5. Copy the GA4 Measurement ID
6. And paste it into the Measurement ID field in your integration window.
Obtaining the GA4 API secret from your GA4 property
1. Scroll down on your GA4 Web stream details window and click Measurement Protocol API secrets, then proceed to Review terms and acknowledge the User Data Collection Acknowledgement.
2. Click Create, add a nickname for this API secret (eg. “Omniconvert”), then proceed to click the Create button in the new modal window.
3. Click the copy symbol next to the Secret value.
4. And paste it into the API Secret field in your integration window, then Save to finalize your GA4 server side integration.
Congratulations! Now your Omniconvert experiment details should start collecting in your GA4 property, but we’re not done yet.
We still need to make sure that the custom event parameters that are collected via the Omniconvert GA4 event are configured in your GA4 property, because, even if they will be collected, they won’t show up in your GA4 property and will not be retroactively populated before they are defined.
Step 3. Defining the custom dimensions in your GA4 property
In order for those two event parameters (“Exp_Name” & “Exp_Var”) to be recognized and processed in your GA4 property, they have to be firstly defined in your GA4 admin section, as shown below:
1. Navigate to your Google Analytics account.
2. Click the bottom right cog symbol to navigate to your Admin section.
3. From the Data Display category, click Custom Definitions:
4. Click Create custom dimension:
5. Input exactly “Exp_Name” in both the Dimension name and the Event parameter fields. Also, make sure the Scope is set as “Event”, then click Save.
6. Repeat the process for the second custom dimension that you’ll define exactly as “Exp_Var”, then click Save.
The end result should look like below.
That’s it! You’ll now have a working integration of Omniconvert events and experiment details flowing seamlessly into your GA4 property for you to segment and delve even deeper into your data, freshly enhanced with a new layer of analysis capabilities.
